AI authority is moving faster than risk accountability

AI adoption is changing who leads the conversation inside some organizations. In What senior leaders want to know about AI, MIT Sloan School of Management reports that senior business leaders now have a driving role in adoption, where IT departments often pushed earlier digital transformations.

That shift is also visible in executive education. MIT Sloan Executive Education is seeing non-IT executives seek the knowledge needed to guide their IT departments into AI adoption. Technology and IT professionals still participate, but business leaders are increasingly taking responsibility for setting direction.

The organization starts changing before the technology is fully adopted. Decision authority moves toward senior leadership, while responsibility for evaluating security, data, and intellectual-property risks remains concentrated in IT. That separation is worth examining because the people pressing for movement may not be the same people accountable for containing its risks.

Business leadership is setting the pace

The reported change gives senior leaders a more active role than they may have held in previous technology transformations. They aren't simply approving an IT-led program. They are learning about AI so they can guide IT toward adoption.

This can bring business priorities closer to technology decisions. It can also alter the working relationship between leadership and IT. Once senior leaders begin setting the pace, IT is no longer only an advocate for change. It may also become the function expected to define where adoption is safe, where uncertainty remains, and where the organization should pause.

IT resistance can reflect real accountability

Peter Hirst describes IT organizations as often resistant to AI opportunities and changes because of the pace, the unknowns, and both perceived and actual risks. The concerns he identifies are concrete: exposure of sensitive data, leakage of ideas, and the possible misappropriation of intellectual property.

Seen in that context, resistance isn't necessarily evidence that IT lacks ambition. It may reflect the responsibilities IT continues to carry. A function accountable for information and technology risk has reason to be cautious when important questions remain unresolved.

This is where an ordinary disagreement about speed can reveal a deeper structural tension. Business leadership has growing authority to accelerate adoption, while IT retains much of the responsibility for assessing and containing the consequences. The two groups can therefore approach the same decision from different, legitimate positions.

Decision authority needs a visible boundary

The evidence points to a question of decision authority. Who can approve an AI use case when its business value appears promising but its data, security, or intellectual-property risks remain uncertain?

A senior leader may have the authority to set the adoption agenda. IT may have the expertise and accountability needed to identify unacceptable exposure. If the relationship between those roles remains implicit, the organization has no clear way to resolve the tension between momentum and containment.

A useful interpretation is that AI governance may require explicit joint decision rights between business leadership and IT. It may also require a clear route for escalating decisions when business value and technical risk can't be reconciled at the working level. These are structural responses suggested by the reported shift, rather than practices established by the source article.

Leaders should examine where risk changes the decision

Leaders can begin by looking closely at a real AI adoption decision. When IT raises a concern about sensitive data, idea leakage, or intellectual property, does that concern change the decision, trigger further review, or simply become advice for the business sponsor to consider?

The answer reveals where authority actually sits. It also shows whether responsibility and authority are aligned. If IT remains accountable for containing a risk but has no defined role in deciding whether the organization accepts it, leadership pressure and technical caution are likely to remain difficult to coordinate.

AI adoption changes the leadership system

Senior business involvement can give AI adoption strategic direction and urgency. But urgency alone doesn't resolve the risks that make IT cautious. As authority moves toward business leadership, the organization needs greater clarity about how business priorities and technical accountability meet in actual decisions.

AI adoption is therefore more than a change in technology sponsorship. It is a change in the coordination system between the leaders setting direction and the functions expected to keep the organization within acceptable risk. Making that relationship explicit may be as important as choosing the technology itself.
